Slag, more appropriately known as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag, is a by-product of the steel making process. When the slag is removed from the blast furnace operation, cooled and ground, it has cementitious properties. So when it is combined with Portland cement it results in higher strength and better concrete performance. Slag has gone from useless by-product to high performance material in the last several years.
